Fire alarm commissioners find you the right fire protection
Choosing a fire alarm system isn’t as easy or straightforward as you may think. There are different kinds of fire alarm systems and there is no universal one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to addressing your fire protection needs.
Every business owner and a commercial property manager will be required by law (The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005) to protect their occupants from the risk of fire by installing an appropriate fire protection system.
You will also need to have sound fire safety policies in place that cover what your staff or building occupants should do in the event of an alarm sounding, including what escape routes they should take, where they should gather for a headcount and roll call.
You will have other fire safety aspects to consider too, such as fire door installation and sprinkler systems to cover different areas of your building. Our highly trained team of fire alarm commissioners will be able to offer you a comprehensive service to ensure your needs are covered, starting with a fire risk assessment and inspection of your premises.
What kind of fire alarm do you need?
Your choice of fire alarm system will depend on the type of property you have and what business or operation you run from there. There are different types of alarm systems available so you need to choose one that is better suited to meet your requirements rather than trying to work with an old fire protection system that was installed in your building by a previous occupant that was designed to cover a different set of needs.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to completely remove and replace your current fire safety system. By having your current system thoroughly inspected and tested by one of our fire safety engineers, you may be able to simply replace worn or damaged parts, extend your protection system to cover more of your building or look at having a completely new installation if we find your current system isn’t appropriate or compliant. As fire alarm commissioners, we can then advise about the most suitable systems for you.
There are three main types of fire alarm system that will cover your needs: conventional, wireless and addressable.
Conventional Fire Alarm systems
Conventional fire alarms are the type that divides your premises up into zones. When you get a fire emergency, the fire alarm panel will trigger and alert you to which zone contains the fire, but these traditional fire alarms don’t tell you the exact location of the fire, only which zone it is in.
A conventional fire alarm system is usually most suited to smaller properties with a lower risk of having a fire break out, such as a single retail unit that contains mainly non-flammable stock.
Addressable Fire Alarm systems
This type of fire alarm protection system is much smarter because each fire detection device has its own individual electronic address. So what this means is that if one device should activate, the fire alarm panel will be able to tell you exactly where the problem is.
This means that you will be able to pinpoint exactly where a fire outbreak is and you will be able to respond quickly to extinguish the fire before it has a chance to spread and engulf more of your building.
Business owners with larger premises will benefit most from an addressable fire alarm system, as would those who operate higher risk environments. Ideal candidates for this level of protection would be hospitals, care homes, schools and premises that handle flammable chemicals or other combustible materials.
Wireless Fire Alarm systems
Wireless fire systems work in pretty much the same way as addressable fire alarms. However, the biggest advantage of a wireless system is that there are no wires to get in the way. Instead, the individual devices will communicate with the fire alarm panel using by using secure wireless links running from their fire sensors.
A wireless system is much preferred for clients that don’t want a lot of ugly cabling to cause issues, such as within buildings of historical interest, or those where wires would be impractical.
